‘Come on Angel, don’t you ever want to fly?’ 1948. Cork City’s crying. Rations. Unemployment. And those unforgiving clouds. But two girls are plotting a new planet. Kitty’s a native, desperate for adventure, and Angel’s a blow-in searching for home. Through flying kites, dress-up and play, they leave behind their broken families and war-time grief, and let their fantasies find wings. But what happens when the line gets caught and reality beckons? KITES is a fast-paced, visually striking play about the rite of passage from girlhood to womanhood in post-war Ireland, exploring gender roles, sexuality, friendship, love and rage.
LIPZINC THEATRE is a young avant-garde Irish theatre company, conceived through a need to make work that is truthful to the artist and vital to the audience. ‘Lip’ means the opening of the mouth, where words and feelings escape and let loose. ‘Zinc’ means the essential element to the body that we cannot live without. LipZinc creates entertaining, visually vibrant, and socially engaging theatre. We are interested in subverting expectations of appearances and societal roles, exploring themes such as gender, sexuality, identity, dreams, and escapism. LipZinc was born kicking and screaming and she’s here to stay.
KITES enjoyed a successful run at this year’s Camden and Edinburgh Fringe festivals, and will be “coming home” to Cork later this month, supported by the Cork County Council and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.
In late 2021 e had a successful sold-out run of Dublin in a Rainstorm at the Smock Alley Theatre in Dublin. Prior to this, in September 2021 we were funded by Athlone Family Resource Centre (AFRC) to premiere Finding Joseph at the Dean Crowe Theatre. At the 2021 Edinburgh Fringe we presented our play Pheromone on CArts, CVenues digital program, to critical acclaim: “A compelling watch” ⭐⭐⭐⭐- London Theatre 1, “pure theatre in its look and style” ⭐⭐⭐⭐- Everything Theatre. In 2022, we were awarded a residency at the Pavilion Theatre to develop KITES.
