Striking Performance Poetry, Disarming comedy, and a celebration of Gender Fluidity from a part-time Transwoman playfully establishing her voice.

Alice d’Lumiere generally prefers to go unnoticed; she wants to be an ordinary person on the train. She’s happy to be anonymous; a sensible, middle-aged woman. However, she’s also a Poet and Performance Artist; and cursed with an occasional, but irresistible desire to speak up, and be the centre of attention! Things get a little complex because Alice is also gender fluid…

This is a show in verse and prose, with flashes of cabaret and burlesque, in which Alice playfully explores her wonderful, occasionally counter-intuitive, position, striving to both fit into another gender, whilst at the same time yearning to establish a unique, personal voice for herself.

A show about how delightfully queer life can be when you decide to step beyond your birth gender.

Alice d'Lumiere
Alice is a Gender-fluid performer who grew up in East Anglia. They are a theatre-maker, playwright and performance poet, and in various genders a regular contributor to the regional arts scene, possessing a long-standing creative partnership with Colchester Arts Centre and more recently a burgeoning artistic relationship with major regional producing Theatre, the Mercury.

Alice has been a regular contributor and compere for Colchester Pride since its inception in 2017. A proud East Anglian, Alice has also performed at Norwich Pride.

All of Alice's artistic output involves an element of personal challenge; pushing herself to learn new and unlikely performance skills; from close-up magic, to burlesque and aerial hoop. She has performed live as a full-sized Christmas Tree Fairy and her next challenge, "The Trans Lady Sings", involves attempting to become an Opera Singer with no previous musical experience...

"Speaking Out and Fitting In" has been supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

FOUR STARS

"Surprises abound and she entertains with her wry humour... Burlesque, cabaret, beautiful poetry, and childhood dreams coming true is what you can expect."

OXFORD DAILY INFO

"Playful, kind, occasionally bawdy, but always considerate, Speaking out and fitting In! is a one-person show that fluidly moves through gender and identity, exploring (and occasionally exploding) preconceptions... Alice d’Lumiere wears their contradictions and complexity with verve and style."

FOUR STARS

"a show that, for me, had two main strengths. The first is the voice itself. Alice and her male counterpart, Darren Gooding, explore many voices in the search for her own... The second point is kindness. It’s a show created with care and compassion, and we feel welcomed into it"
