Sexual Content, Themes of Violence

Vanilla draws on the personal experience of three young women, stuck in the no-mans land of life in their early twenties and the desperation to remain fun and adventurous. Through spoken word, song, and verbatim they explore the performance of life and sex, from the influences of porn to the blurred lines of consent, and the difficulty of setting boundaries both in and outside of the bedroom. Is being Vanilla really an insult, or are we just afraid of the ordinary?

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Fur Coat No Knickers Theatre is a female-led company making art that challenges the concept of a ‘woman's place’ in society. We challenge the ideologies, gendered stereotypes, and social taboos that continue to hold women back through theatre, film, and performance art. Our previous work includes Roast Beef – a photography exploration at the Vagina Museum that explored the derogatory food related stereotypes used to insult the vulva, Waking the Witch - a voice based performance that addressed contemporary violence against women, evoking the witch trials of Early Modern England, and Sour Cherries - a short film exploring the social construct of virginity, produced at the Au Brana Creative Development Residency 2022 in France. Fur Coat No Knickers Theatre are one of the current Associate Artists of the Royal and Derngate Theatre in Northampton, and work closely with the University of Northampton, where the company was originally formed.
