“Nt a brdway ‘smash’ xctly” - Bob Geldof
Imagine, for a second, that Dante is a heroin addict and Beatrice isn’t breathing. He finds Her slumped on the kitchen floor amidst a crumbling and high-speed dystopia. One more hit then he’ll definitely tell someone. But for now She’s going to keep Herself alive, by taking Him through His nine circles of personal Hell. On a comedown.
A natural disaster at a church service; an all night wake at a casino; a grieving little Brother pointing him back to God; a family wishing He was the one in the coffin, Blue Departed is a turbulent new play from emerging playwright Serafina Cusack (Royal Court, King’s Head, Theatre 503).
Selected and performed as part of the The Script Readers programme at Theatre Royal Stratford East this is Serafina’s first full length collaboration with Henry C Krempels (Arcola, VAULT 2018, Theatre 503, Young Vic Freshworks) Lead Director of Anima Theatre Company.
“Exploring Dante and addiction with a mixture of grossness, vulnerability and love. Blue Departed is superb” - The Script Readers

Anima Theatre Company is focused on the faltering line between fact and fiction. Working in the realms of experimental theatre and new writing we are pushing up against the boundaries of what is real and what is not. We came together through our mutual interest in inclusive theatre and giving voice to those who struggle to be heard.
Our previous work includes The Sleeper (Theatre 503, Edinburgh Festival 2017, The Rosemary Branch Theatre, The Space and Brighton Fringe 2018) which was Longlisted for the Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award 2017 and selected to be part of the Brighton Fringe WINDOW 10. Where We Are/Place to Be (VAULT 2018, Arcola) explores new possibilities for community theatre through ‘Place' and most recently we worked with musician Anna B Savage (Omeara, Soup Kitchen, Bristol Exchange) on a live show that blends conceptual performance, film and gig theatre.
In each project we undertake, our aim is to promote collaboration, conversation and connection while bringing new ideas and new audiences to theatre. We are currently running a series of workshops based around the idea of ‘Non-Fiction Theatre’.
