Mark Bittlestone: Pity Laughs

Gay orphan Mark Bittlestone laughs through a lifetime of tears.

In 2014 Mark Bittlestone Came Out As Gay, As If Being An Orphan Wasn’t Funny Enough!!

Which is worse? Losing both your parents in awful circumstances or being gay? Sadly, Mark Bittlestone doesn’t have the luxury of choice. Join gay orphan Mark Bittlestone for an hour of laughs based on a lifetime of horrible tears.

‘Pity Laughs’ is the debut stand-up hour from comedian Mark Bittlestone that explores Mark’s experiences of being gay and losing both of his parents at a young age. The show delivers the message that it’s ok to laugh about tragedy, and that being a gay orphan is as funny as it is ‘unlucky’.

About the company

StraightUp Productions Ltd

StraightUp Productions is a theatre and new writing company comprising recent university graduates Will Dalrymple, Mark Bittlestone and Will Penswick. StraightUp’s mission is to produce new writing that entertains above all else. StraightUp’s first two productions ‘Pity Laughs: A Tale of Two Gays’ and ‘The Oppression Olympics’ both played at the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe. ‘Pity Laughs’ received 5 stars from Broadway Baby, describing it as ‘the first true gem of the 2017 fringe’. ‘The Oppression Olympics’, a comedy drama that looked scathingly at self-pity, was one of The Fringe Review’s ‘recommended shows’, described as ‘a brilliant, tightly crafted piece of writing, full of belly-laughs but with an undercurrent that chills’. StraightUp’s first London show, Will Dalrymple’s adaptation of Tristram Shandy, played at the OSO Centre theatre in Barnes from November 7-8 to excellent reviews. London Theatre 1 gave it four stars and wrote ‘in short: it’s really rather good’, while A Younger Theatre described it as ‘bubbling with energy and wit’. StraightUp aims to continue to produce entertaining comedy and theatre in London Off West End theatres and Fringe festivals around the UK.
