“The air is the only place that is free from prejudice”. Bessie Coleman
They said she couldn’t do it but she could.
From going around the world on a bicycle to doing spectacular airshows or climbing the highest mountains on earth, Annie "Londonderry" Kopchovsky, Bessie Coleman and Junko Tabei fought the prejudice and scepticism that surrounded them.
Their achievements became milestones in the path towards women’s rights and freedom, challenging the assumption that the “fairer sex” lacks the physical and mental stamina for big deeds. Though their adventures were as breathtaking, spellbinding and phenomenal as their male counterparts, where are their stories now?
For one night only Annie, Bessie and Junko come back for the live recording of the podcast “Miles Apart Together” and share their stories.
PAPER SMOKERS is a London based international collective of storytellers. We produce film, theatre and installations and are Third Angel Mentees.
The name comes from a poem written by Italian writer Cesare Pavese. We strongly believe in the value of international collaboration and the coming together of artists from different backgrounds as precious tools to interpret today’s world. We share stories of outsiders and focus on work that is multilingual, transnational and exists across borders.
With Katharina Reinthaller we developed a show called “Diary of an Expat” which has been receiving 4 star reviews and praise at Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Katharina is a director and dramaturg who trained at University of Vienna and with StoneCrabs Theatre Company, among many other shows she has also directed Labels (Edinburgh Fringe Festival - Fringe First Winner/Theatre Royal Stratford East/Adelaide & Perth Fringe/Singapore Fringe/University of North Carolina). “Miles Apart Together” is our second production with Katharina.
Reviews of previous productions:
BROADWAY WORLD ****
“Expressive and genuinely hilarious. Gragnani keeps the energy and comedy flowing in clockwork pace, building a strong and stable satire that feels relevant and resonant in the current political climate.”
THEATRE WEEKLY ****
“This is one of those rare productions that makes you think long and hard about a subject, without even realising it’s had that affect on you.”
LONDON THEATRE 1 ****
“A heartfelt and poignant production.”
“Best Fringe Shows for Brexit Satire. These Brexit dramas all delivered wonderfully in their own way. If we can’t make Britain great again, we can at least make it funny.”
“A warm, engaging presence”.
NUMBER 9 REVIEWS
“Perfect comedy timing.”
