Have you ever lived outside yourself? Have you ever dreamed of escaping your identity, or yearned to leave behind those definitions handed down to you: loud or quiet, male or female, straight, gay, working/middle/upper class?
Lucy Roslyn's new play is the story of a person looking for escape, a person desperate to leave behind the identitarian bullshit of 2019.
In 1928 Virginia Woolf imagined her own freedom through the character of Orlando. Heartbroken by her affair with Vita Sackville-West, Woolf created a young boy born in Elizabethan England, who lives and loves, writes and rewrites through four hundred years, ending her days as a woman in the twentieth century.
Woolf's novel strains at the boundaries of identity: are we any one thing? Or are our selves 'stacked like dinner plates', one on top of the other?
Written and performed by Lucy Roslyn (The State vs John Hayes, Showmanship, Goody) and directed by Josh Roche, winner of the JMK Award 2017 (My Name is Rachel Corrie, Plastic, This Must Be The Place), Orlando is brought to you by the creative team behind Kenneth Emson's Plastic at the Old Red Lion.
Lucy Roslyn, Josh Roche and producer Jessie Anand have been brought together for the first time on Orlando, inspired by Virginia Woolf's novel and the nonsense of 2018's political landscape. Also collaborating on Orlando are Sophie Thomas, Peter Small and Kieran Lucas, who worked with Josh on Kenneth Emson's Plastic at the Old Red Lion earlier this year.
Lucy Roslyn is an award winning writer, actor and illustrator. Her debut play, The State vs John Hayes, was performed in London, Edinburgh and New York, winning the Argus Angel Award for Artistic Excellence. Her subsequent plays, Goody and Showmanship, have been performed to critical success in Edinburgh. As an actor she has performed in New York and across London, at venues such as the Park Theatre and the Finborough Theatre.
Josh Roche is the winner of the JMK Award 2017, directing My Name is Rachel Corrie at the Young Vic Theatre. From 2011–2016 Josh was the Artistic Director of Fat Git Theatre and he is currently Associate Director with Poleroid Theatre. He has directed work by writers such as George Saunders, Howard Brenton, Joe White, Kenneth Emson, Brad Birch and Laura Jacqmin, produced at Soho Theatre, Theatre 503, New Diorama Theatre, Warwick Arts Centre and across the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Josh is the previous Writers’ Centre Associate at the Soho Theatre and an Associate Reader for Sonia Friedman Productions. Josh has worked as an assistant director with John Dove, Gregory Doran, Polly Findlay, Maria Aberg, Joe Murphy and Steve Marmion. He has directed one-off events for Shakespeare’s Globe and The Royal Shakespeare Company.
