About the company

Hyphen Theatre Company

Hyphen Theatre Company is a collaboration formed in 2013 between theatre makers Esmé Patey-Ford and Chris Woodley. We tell stories about recent history and make work that is honest, brave, playful and has heart. Shoreditch Town Hall has supported Hyphen since its inception, providing research and development, and rehearsal space in kind. We have also received similar support from The Pleasance Islington, Greenwich Theatre, Arts Depot and Above the Stag. In response to Thatcher’s Section 28, Chris wrote his first full-length play, Next Lesson. A sold-out industry preview was followed by a 6-night sold-out run in October 2015 at the Pleasance Islington. We received 5* from Gay Times, and effusive write-ups from Diva and QX Magazines; the show has since been work-shopped in New York by an Anglo-American theatre company. Chris then wrote his second full-length play, The Soft Subject (A Love Story), which has been developed at Greenwich Theatre, Arts Depot, the Leikfélag Mosfellssveitar Bæjarleikhúsinun in Reykjavik, and Shoreditch Town Hall. In August The Soft Subject (A Love Story) has its premier at Assembly Hall as part of The Edinburgh Festival. Hyphen is also currently working on a new play by Esmé Patey-Ford, 10% Grace, which had its first showing at The Pleasance Islington’s Scratch night on 13th March 2017.
